Baffert Strums Winning Tune With Midnight Lute
Southern California trainer Bob Baffert continues to see dividends from his decision to take a string from his Southern California stable to Saratoga. In the $250,000 Forego Handicap (gr. I), his Midnight Lute made the lead on the turn of the seven-furlong test and rolled to his first grade I win by more than two lengths under substitute rider Shaun Bridgmohan.
Test Lap Goes Well for Smokey Stover in Icecapade
Leading sprinter Smokey Stover took a successful test spin for the upcoming TVG Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) at Monmouth Park, winning the $103,000 Icecapade Stakes over three rivals in a solid time of 1:08 4/5 at the New Jersey track Sept. 1.
Hard Spun Fights Back, Wins King's Bishop
Heavily favored Hard Spun, a colt who has made all the major dances for trainer Larry Jones this season, earned his elusive first grade I victory when he turned back a serious challenge from First Defence in the $250,000 King's Bishop (gr. I) for 3-year-olds at Saratoga Aug. 25.
Greg's Gold Glides Into BC Sprint Picture
Greg's Gold, who returned earlier this year from a 17-month layoff after bowing a tendon, completed his comeback for trainer David Hofmans Aug. 19 with a 1 1/2-length victory in the $300,000 Pat O'Brien Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II) over seven furlongs on the Del Mar Polytrack.
Most Distinguished Rallies to Win Amsterdam
It took Most Distinguished eight tries to score his first victory. Now, less than six months after finally securing a win, it seems he is on track to become one of the better 3-year-olds in the country.
In Summation Sews Up Bing Crosby Upset
In Summation, invading from New York for trainer Christophe Clement, nipped Greg's Gold by a thin nose in a heart-pounding finish to the Bing Crosby Handicap (gr. I) at Del Mar.
Diabolical Turns Up Heat in Vanderbilt Win
A freshened Diabolical sat patiently behind a hot pace for jockey Mario Pino, then turned in a powerful run from the eighth pole to edge a determined Attila's Storm in the $260,000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (gr. II) at Saratoga.
